After nearly five decades of singing about a war that continues to haunt a generation of Americans, legendary performer Bob Dylan finally got his chance to see Vietnam at peace.
The American folk singer and songwriter known for his anti-war anthems gave a special concert Sunday in the former Saigon, nearly 36 years after the Vietnam War ended.
Dylan, 69, jammed on stage in a black jacket, purple shirt and white hat in the warm evening air, singing favorites such as “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and “Highway 61 Revisited.”
Only about half of the 8,000 seats at RMIT University were sold to a mix of Vietnamese and foreigners who danced on the grass as Dylan played guitar, harmonica and the keyboard. With more than 60 percent of the country’s 86 million people born after the war, many young people here are more familiar with contemporary pop stars like Justin Bieber.
Still, Dylan’s music during the tumultuous 1960s touched thousands of people in both nations.
“Bob Dylan’s music opened up a path where music was used as a weapon to oppose the war in Vietnam” and fight injustice and racism, said Tran Long An, 67, vice president of the Vietnam Composers’ Association. “That was the big thing that he has done for music.”
An was a student in Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City, during the war and took to the streets with other Communist sympathizers calling for the killing to stop. He remains a big Dylan fan and has a large collection of the singer’s records.
For some who were fighting in Vietnam’s jungles, Dylan’s music was a source of hope.
“We listened to anything that spoke of peace. We called him the peace poet,” said Stan Karber, 60, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, who served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971 and has lived in Ho Chi Minh City for the past 15 years. “I’ll be dancing here in a minute.”
The fighting ended on April 30, 1975, when northern Communist forces seized the U.S.-backed capital of South Vietnam, reunifying the country. About 58,000 Americans were killed along with some 3 million Vietnamese.
Sunday’s concert followed the 10th anniversary of the death of anti-war Vietnamese folk singer Trinh Cong Son, known as the “Bob Dylan of Vietnam.” The opening Vietnamese acts played a tribute to Son, who remains highly popular.
Dylan is one of the top foreign artists to perform in Vietnam, where big-name concerts are still rare and the Communist government maintains strict controls over expression. Dylan’s song list had to be preapproved by the government, but promoter Rod Quinton, general manager of Ho Chi Minh City-based Saigon Sound System, said no restrictions were placed on the extensive set list submitted.
Dylan received criticism earlier this week following his first-ever shows in China for allowing the Communist government there to vet his song list. Two popular anti-war songs, “The Times They Are a’Changin’” and “Blowin’ in the Wind,” were not performed at the Beijing and Shanghai shows, but it was unclear if they were submitted for consideration.
U.S.-based Human Rights Watch issued a statement saying, “Dylan should be ashamed of himself.”
“The young Dylan wouldn’t have let a government tell him what to sing,” Brad Adams, executive director of the organization’s Asia division, said in the statement. “He has a historic chance to communicate a message of freedom and hope, but instead he is allowing censors to choose his playlist.”
Dylan’s U.S. publicist referred questions to the promoters in Vietnam, who declined to comment.
Vietnam, while prospering as one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, does not tolerate any challenge to its one-party rule. Rare protests are quickly quashed by security forces, and a spate of prominent pro-democracy activists have recently been arrested or given lengthy jail terms after calling for democracy. The government also routinely blocks access to websites considered a threat, including Facebook.
But the country, once defined by grainy images of U.S. planes dropping bombs over pockmarked jungles, has moved far beyond what Vietnamese here call the American War. Since the mid-1980s, Vietnam has embraced capitalism, and today’s Ho Chi Minh City is electric with a sea of motorbikes buzzing past shops selling everything from knockoff North Face backpacks to real Chanel bags.
A single glass skyscraper defines the city skyline, but the flurry of construction in all directions assures visitors that more change is coming.
“The chances of watching Bob Dylan live are not many, and he’s no longer young,” said Hoang Dao Cam, 42, who flew from the capital, Hanoi, for the show with five other hard-core fans. He said his father taught him English at age 6 by singing “Blowin’ in the Wind” to him. “I just cannot miss this opportunity.”

Whether it is a party or formal ceremony, it would take some effort to imagine a corporate event without the element of entertainment. An entire corporate event in its broad sense (including corporate retreats, corporate Christmas parties and non-cash incentives), may seem nothing more than entertainment. The element of entertainment is also present in the schedules of such events as corporate meetings, sales conferences, product launches, trade shows and so on (why not start a conference with a stunning lights show?). In any case, entertaining programmes are far more than just having fun.
Corporate events make people come together; meanwhile an entertaining programme may bring great benefits for the company. To be more precise, corporate entertainment is a powerful tool to create and sustain the desired relationships among the employees or between the company and its clients or business associates and other groups of people depending on the purpose of the event.
For instance, non-cash incentives or corporate retreats are ideal to enhance relationships between the company and its staff. Moreover, as these are often given for groups, communication among the participants is thus inspired. Group retreats afford more time for personal interaction, so employees can to get to know one another as human beings and not just as co-workers. This ‘human factor’ is vital in corporate environment that can otherwise appear utilitarian.
Similarly, entertaining team building events, such as canoeing, sailing, karting, snowmobiling, and other team activities help to forge the spirit of community. Adventure themed corporate entertainment events have been around for quite a while now. They provide you with an exciting and entertaining day out and offer the chance to sample activities that most people would not normally experience. They will also be pampered as sporting clubs and venues compete for their slice of the huge sums spent on corporate entertainment. A downside is, as with the adventure days, some staff could be thoroughly bored by the sporting event so do your homework carefully.
Food and Evening Events
We are talking casino nights, wine tasting, chocolate tasting, gourmet meals and so on here. Even the most sour of your employees could not fail to have a great time, unless of course they are teetotal or on a diet! The casino night is popular with just about everybody – the point is to try and make money, but even losing huge sums can make for great entertainment. With the tastings, always make sure that they are a little bit special, either at a special venue or with a company who emphasises the ‘fun’ in ‘corporate fun event’.
Themed Events
The corporate entertainment events that prove hugely successful with staff and clients are themed days – It’s a Knockout for example. An up and coming fun day idea is the Medieval themed event that have developed from the medieval banquet style of event. Participants dress up in medieval clothing for the whole event, which is just the start of the fun. As the day progresses, they learn and practice an assortment of medieval skills like archery, building and firing a trebuchet (siege catapult), getting a reluctant boar to the kitchen and jousting. As the day develops, everyone is involved in an archery battle, where the battle of Agincourt is (sort of) re-enacted. The day is given a real sense of direction by the jousting finale. In the jousting, each team’s best knight competes for the championship – on horses propelled by the other team members. Great fun indeed!
So to sum up, there are many different events out there; all have their merits and drawbacks so think carefully before choosing. Ring the changes, don’t go for the same event each time, no matter how much fun it is, too much can be boring and demotivate staff. Some corporate entertainment also doubles as team building which is an added bonus to your organisation.

Try to plan your event at least 2 weeks in advance. You can throw a last minute party, but things will be much less stressful with careful planning.
Before sending out the Invitations it is a very good idea to call or email your guests. Tell them about your party including theme, date & time. Inform them that due to the nature of murder mystery games you need a definite R.S.V.P. before assigning characters. Let your guests know that when they confirm you are counting on them to attend.
When it comes to food easier is better. I have thrown murder mystery parties where I did all of the cooking and it made for a very stressful day and party. Unless you can have your party catered, the easiest menu is done potluck. The first time I decided to do this I worried about what my guests would think, but to my surprise they loved the idea. It gives them a chance to contribute to the party and show off their culinary skills. Just about everyone has a special dish that they excel at. If not there are always needed items that don’t require cooking skills. Drinks, ice, cups etc…
After the solution has been read it is always fun to go around the room and let each character reveal their secrets. Your guests will be amazed at what they didn’t know was going on under their noses.
This tip isn’t necessary but I have found it adds a fun element to a murder mystery party. If your party utilizes game money I ask guests to also bring a small inexpensive item. I also cruise the dollar store and spend about $30 on small, unique items. For my last party I bought butterfly houses, wind chimes, scented candles unique picture frames and other items. After the party ended we held an auction with all the items. Guests used their play money winnings to bid and purchase items.
Everyone left with a small remembrance in addition to a smile on his or her face.

Suddenly the lights go out and you are startled by the sound of a gunshot. The lights come back on and you see a dead man lying next to you! As you look around the room you notice some very shady characters. One of them must be the murderer, but which one is it?
This may sound like a movie, but it isn’t. You are in fact participating in an exciting murder mystery party game.
Murder Mystery Parties are becoming a very popular entertainment choice for Party Hostesses looking for something unique. Party planners want their event to be talked about in excited conversations for weeks afterwards. Your run of the mill food, music and social gathering just doesn’t garner real excitement. Hostesses are now looking for other ways to get their guest excited about attending. Many are tying Theme Parties, which can be fun. Even more fun is a murder mystery theme party.
Murder mystery games have been around a very long time and have been very popular in the UK for about 15 years. The last 2 years has seen a huge growth of interest in the USA as more people are becoming exposed to them. The first murder mystery games featured actors who portrayed characters using scripted roles. They would mingle with the guests dropping clues. These are still performed today at large fund raising events and murder mystery dinner theaters.
The next generation of games let the guests themselves play the characters but the parts were still scripted. Later boxed sets were introduced which were scripted and played out in rounds, much like a board game. While these could be enjoyable they lacked spontaneity or the ability to be creative. Everything went exactly as scripted.
Today a new genre of Murder Mystery Games is emerging. In the older versions solving the murder was the sole point of the game. Some of the new murder mystery games have many subplots. Guests will have their own nefarious agendas. Parts are no longer scripted. Instead characters receive detailed backgrounds which details their fictional relationships with other characters at the party. They also have secrets of their own which may have nothing to do with the murder that occurs. Participants take on their characters persona.
After the murder they learn certain details of the crime through evidence, eavesdropping and questioning other characters. Some games include play money, which can be used for buying information, blackmailing and other nefarious schemes. All of this leads to extensive social interaction, which is the real point of a party, isn’t it?
How many boring parties have you been to where there were small groups of people gathered together into clusters? Or even more horrifying to the host/ess are people standing around not conversing at all. This just doesn’t happen at a well-written murder mystery party. With a good game the guests get so caught up in their own schemes that they sometimes forget to even investigate the murder!
Each murder mystery game usually takes place in exotic locations and timelines. These can include gangsters in Chicago during the roaring twenties or sock hops in the fifties. You might even be taken to fictional settings. These settings allow participants to don great costumes, which allow them to more fully experience the ambience of the game.
Using this advice your next party is sure to be one people will talk about for weeks. So be brave. Plan a party your guests will be DYING to attend!
