Carlos Nuzman, President of Rio 2016, has claimed that British businesses will be crucial in helping the Brazilian city to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games in just under five years.

Nuzman highlighted the fact that British firm AECOM last month won the international competition to design the masterplan for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park and he believes that other British businesses will follow their lead.

“British businesses can provide invaluable expertise and direction that we do not have in Brazil,” said Nuzman here at the Rio Business Forum Event here.

“The fact that the British firm AECOM will design the masterplan for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park is just one example of this.

“There were 60 entries from firms in 18 countries to design the master plan for our Olympic Park but their experience was crucial for us.

“AECOM designed the master plan for the Olympic Park for London 2012 which gives us reassurance and the experience of the people and businesses who worked on London will also be very important for us as well.

“Now is the time when we are really stepping up our preparations and awarding our major contracts so we will be looking to Britain as their businesses will be crucial for us in organising our event and I believe that they can set up successfully in Brazil.”

Nuzman also pointed to the example of Mike Lee (pictured right with Nuzman), the founder and chairman of international sport business consultancy Vero Communications.

The London-based organisation launched their first overseas office in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year under the company name MLA True Communications to capitalise on sports industry opportunities in Brazil ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It comes shortly after Vero spearheaded the successful Rio 2016 Bid campaign back in 2009 under the direction of Lee, the former director of communications and public affairs during London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid.

“Mike Lee, who helped us a lot during our bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympics, has already shown that British companies can set up successfully in Rio and in Brazil,” Nuzman said.

“His company is providing leading communications in Rio by drawing on the experience of their London-based company Vero.

“I am sure that many other British companies can follow this example and move successfully to Brazil as there are so many opportunities there.

“We are the world’s seventh largest economy we are continuing to grow all the time despite the worldwide economic problems so it is a very attractive place for businesses to be right now.”

Formula One team McLaren has agreed a partnership with pharmaceutical giant and Olympic partner GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to utilise their analytical, strategic and data management expertise.

McLaren will help develop new efficient planning processes, data modelling tools and real time monitoring and forecasting among a range of other services.

GSK, the laboratory service provider to the Olympic Games, believes that McLaren’s technological acumen will deliver a real competitive advantage to their work.

McLaren will work on GSK’s manufacturing, research and development, and consumer healthcare businesses, which cover brands including Lucozade, Panadol and Sensodyne.

GSK chief executive Andrew Witty said: “I am delighted to announce this partnership with McLaren, which brings together two British companies whose continued success hinges on the ability to innovate and rapidly respond to change and competitor activity.

“McLaren has an unparalleled reputation for innovation, built on rigorous analytics and fast decision-making.

“This partnership is another example of GSK looking outside its sector for inspiration and fresh perspectives on how we can achieve our strategic goals in an ever more challenging and fast-changing business environment.”

As part of the agreement, a state of the art learning facility will be built, called the McLaren GSK Centre for Applied Performance at Woking, Surrey, by the McLaren Technology Centre.

It will be for employees of both organisations to collaborate, share ideas and innovate together, and will open in 2013.

McLaren executive chairman Ron Dennis said: “This all-new collaboration between McLaren Group and GSK – McLaren’s first ever such association with a major pharmaceutical corporation – represents a groundbreaking strategic partnership that engages two great British companies at a variety of levels across a number of disciplines in a multi-faceted and ground-breaking way.

“This new partnership is a pioneering and game-changing initiative that will play to the UK’s strengths as a globally competitive industrial powerhouse for science, engineering, technology and R&D.

“In today’s challenging economic conditions, we firmly believe that innovative associations such as ours will play an increasingly significant role in ensuring that the UK remains globally competitive in the field of scientific innovation.”

Tom Curry, the former head of media at the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), has joined global supermarket chain Tesco where he has taken up the newly created role of UK communications director.

Curry joined the ODA from Weber Shandwick in 2006 shortly after the body responsible for ensuring the delivery of venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 was formed.

His departure comes after the ODA completed the Aquatics Centre in July this year – the last of the six main permanent Olympic Park venues to have construction finished on it.

“Tom and his team played a central role in communicating the successful delivery of the project from the cleaning and clearing of the Olympic Park through to the successful completion of the permanent venues a year before the Games,” said an ODA spokesperson.

“We wish him well in his new role.”

As Curry departs, the ODA director of communications Godric Smith has begun to split his time between the organisation and Government Olympic Executive (GOE).

The GOE is part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and oversees the entire London 2012 project with Smith – the former official spokesperson for Tony Blair when he was Prime Minister – the director of communications at the Government organisation.

It is part of the scaling back of the ODA following the completion of the bulk of their work with a number of employees set to move across to the London 2012 Organising Committee to help with Games-time operations.

The ODA share a main office with London 2012 in London’s Canary Wharf, which is a short distance away from the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The work of the ODA in constructing the Olympic venues on time and on budget has been widely praised by many senior figures including London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe.

“Everyone involved can be very proud of the progress of the Olympic Park as a whole,” said Coe.

“I congratulate the ODA and their teams who have done a fantastic job.”

Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt added: “The build project for London 2012 has been a huge success for the British construction industry, public sector and UK plc as a whole.

“The ODA and all those that have worked on the Olympic Park deserve huge credit for what they have achieved.

“The venues are stunning and the stage is now set for us to put on the greatest sporting show on earth.”

The future of the 2012 Olympic stadium has taken a potentially significant shift following Tottenham Hotspur’s latest breakthrough to develop their own ground.

The North London club were recently granted permission to seek a Judicial eview into the awarding of ownership of the Olympic Stadium to West Ham United after London 2012, a long-running saga heavily criticised by organisers of the Game.

Last month, a High Court judge ruled controversially there are sufficient grounds for a review into the process by which West Ham United were unanimously chosen as the preferred bidder to take over stewardship of the arena by the Olympic Park Legacy Committee (OPLC).

Spurs have always pursued the alternative option of remaining where they are under what has become known as the Northumberland Development Project, a scenario that would be welcomed by a majority of fans who oppose moving to Stratford.

The club have now achieved an important step forward by signing a planning agreement with the local Haringey Council.

The club already have a blueprint for a state-of-the-art redevelopment of their White Hart Lane home on a site adjacent to the ground whilst at the same time fighting the decision to give West Ham tenancy of the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

Now, the so-called Section 106 agreement, for months one of the major sticking points towards staying in the area, means the Council have agreed to contribute towards local facilities in and around the new stadium.

Tottenham were given planning permission in October last year but insisted on local and central Government paying towards transport and other facilities around the area rather than footing the bill themselves.

The club were recently on the verge of a deal with London Mayor Boris Johnson to drop their case for judicial review in return for financial help.

Those talks broke down but Tottenham are now expected to sit down again with the Council, Johnson and central Government figures to see if they can come to an agreement, hopefully before the judicial hearing which is due to be heard in the High Court on October 18.

That takes place less than a month before the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) meet to decide the venue of the 2017 World Championships, with London going head to head with Doha.

In an unprecedented and embarrassing U-turn, FIFA tonight backtracked over the appointment of controversial African football powerbroker Issa Hayatou to spearhead the London 2012 football tournament at a time when he is under investigation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for alleged corruption.

Hayatou had also been appointed head of FIFA’s much-prized GOAL project in succession to Mohamed Bin Hammam – banned for life for allegedly offering bribes to Caribbean officials – but in the face of mounting criticism, FIFA sought to change its tune in a bizarre and inexplicable move.

“Due to a technical error, appointments for FIFA Standing Committees have appeared on the FIFA website,” a statement said without detailing who was responsible for the gaffe.

“The appointments for the chairman and deputy chairman of the FIFA Standing Committees will be communicated in due course,” it said.

“Therefore, Issa Hayatou has not been appointed as chairman of the Organising Committee for the Olympic football tournaments.”

Hayatou, a member of FIFA’s executive committee and President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since the 1987, remains under investigation by the IOC following a BBC broadcast just before the vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups alleging that he received a payment of ₣100,000 (£13,270/$20,790) in 1995 from the now defunct marketing company ISL.

Hayatou, a member of the IOC since 2001, claimed his conscience was clear and that the money was given to the CAF to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

But IOC President Jacques Rogge referred the allegations to the IOC Ethics Commission, which still have to report their findings, and could expel the 65-year-old as an IOC member if they find him guilty.

“The IOC has taken note of the allegations made by BBC Panorama and will ask the programme makers to pass on any evidence they may have to the appropriate authorities,” the IOC said at the time.

“The IOC has zero tolerance against corruption and will refer the matter to the IOC ethics commission.”

Six months after the Panorama programme, Hayatou again became embroiled in controversy when a British parliamentary inquiry into England’s failed 2018 World Cup bid was told that he was allegedly paid $1.5 million (£970,057/€1.1 million) each to vote for Qatar’s 2022 bid.

Qatar beat the United States by a landslide in the final round of voting for the right to host the 2022 tournament, the biggest ever upset in bidding history.

Hayatou described the corruption claim as “pure invention”, while Qatar’s Football Association denounced the accusations as “serious and baseless” and said they would “remain unproven because they are false.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron has today launched a new campaign to maximise the economic potential of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, promoting Britain abroad as a place to visit and do business, with plans to generate a boost of at least £1 billion ($1.6 billion/€1.1 billion).

As part of Britain’s Olympic legacy, the Government is planning to seize the opportunities presented by hosting the Games and the new “GREAT” drive is being implemented to deliver long-term growth, while boosting investment and employment for the whole country.

“In 2012 there will be only one place to be,” Cameron said.

“With the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to London next summer, the greatest show on earth is about to arrive in one of the world’s greatest cities.

“We are determined to make the most of this unprecedented opportunity to ensure we deliver a lasting economic legacy that will benefit the whole country.

“This campaign is simple.

“There are so many great things about Britain and we want to send out the message loud and proud that this is a great place to do business, to invest, to study and to visit.”

As well as the anticipated business boost, tourism will also feature heavily as part of the GREAT campaign.

The sector already contributes £115 billion ($180 billion/€132 billion) each year to the UK economy and has the potential to be one of the fastest growing sectors in the years ahead, with the Government aiming to attract an extra four million visitors to the country over the next four years.

Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, said: “With the eyes of the world on Britain in 2012, we have a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything that the country has to offer.

“The GREAT campaign will ensure that we make the most of London 2012 to boost tourism and business, leaving a lasting economic legacy from London’s Games.”

The initiative, which is being developed by communications agency Mother after it was appointed to promote the economic benefits of hosting the Olympics in 2012, is also being backed by a number of Britain’s most eminent organisations and brands, including the likes of Marks & Spencer, Deutsche Bank, National Grid, Sainsbury’s, Old Mutual, Burberry and Rio Tinto.

“We applaud the vision of the new GREAT campaign,” said Burberry’s Angela Ahrendts.

“As a global brand with a proud British heritage, we fully support its aim of raising international awareness of the country’s unique assets and tremendous opportunities for inward investment.”

Meanwhile, Tom Albanese of Rio Tinto, who are also a domestic Tier Three sponsor of the London 2012 Games as the Official Mining and Metals Provider, added: “We are delighted to be associated with this exciting campaign and look forward to engaging with the Government on it going forward.”

The Prime Minister also announced plans today for a global investment conference for investors and business leaders to be held in London on the eve of the Games, in addition to an online British Business Club.

Delivered by UK Trade & Investment, this programme of business summits will include a British Business Embassy at Lancaster House and will highlight key sectors for global growth during the Games.

Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, said: “The Olympics is a tremendous opportunity to showcase the best of British.

“We want to demonstrate the great products we already offer the world, from Formula One racing cars to innovative aerospace technology and cutting edge fashion brands.

“And we want to highlight the opportunities for world-leading businesses with global ambition to invest and grow in Britain.”

The Government will be hoping that the gains to be had from this latest campaign can help to offset a degree of the costs incurred by the actual hosting of the Games, which is currently projected as being some £7.2 billion ($11.2 billion/€8.2 billion).

Stageco provided the festival stages for Rock’n Coke and the Fanta Youth Festival in Istanbul, Turkey this summer.

Rock’n Coke took place on 16th – 17th July at Hezarfen Airfield. The popular festival, which has been running since 2003, attracts major international artists which this year included Limp Bizkit, Motorhead, Moby, Travis, Paolo Nutini and Skunk Anansie.

An audience of over 50,000 people attended, with the main stage capacity catering for 25,000 fans at any one time. Stageco provided its 18m by 14.5m Boogdak stage system, incorporating two PA wings with in-built video screens.

Uluc Dundar, production director at Rock’n Coke, said:

“The Boogdak roof provides perfect clearance and width of performance area for the artists. The PA wings adds to the quality of the artist’s performances and helps to make the festival a big event in our territory.

“We have used Stageco’s Boogdak stage since 2003, and it has become an iconic part of the Rock’n Coke festival. Its structure allows us to work easily under it; behind the scenes, the roof is very useful for the incoming band production teams for safe rigging with a good weight capacity. We are really happy to work with Stageco and its professional team, starting from first reserving the dates, to the final delivery back to Stageco’s warehouse.”

The stage system was then de-rigged and moved via three trucks to its second Istanbul site, the Fanta Youth Festival in Santral on July 30th.

Dirk De Decker, international project manager at Stageco, oversaw the projects. He said:

“Having the two festivals so close to each other meant we could keep costs down for both events. We are very conscious that it is a tight economy at the moment, so we helped the organisers make further savings by sourcing the stage deck from the local area and saving on transport costs. Stageco project managers ensured the local materials were integrated into the stage to the high standards we are renowned for. The configuration of the stage, with PA and video wings, was the same at both events and we had four Stageco crew working closely with a team of local staging professionals to set up and de-rig.”

Serol Agazat, freelance production manager for Fanta Youth Festival Istanbul 2011, said:

“Stageco is one of the best companies to collaborate with. They provide the best equipment and a very experienced crew. Having Stageco involved in the show added significant value to the production. With their perfect gear and aspect of the roof, it made the Istanbul leg of the tour different than others.”

The Fanta Youth Festival toured across 16 locations in Turkey and saw headline acts including Turkish stars Tarkan and maNga perform to audiences of up to 105,000 people per night.
